How to use the Pixel Art Rotator
- Drop a sprite or a sprite sheet onto the tool.
- Click 90°, 180° or 270°, or drag the angle slider for anything in between.
- Keep the RotSprite method for clean lines, or switch to nearest for a harsher, faster result.
- For a sheet, turn on per-frame rotation so every frame turns around its own center.
- Download the PNG, or export a sheet of 4, 8, 16 or 32 evenly spaced angles.
What you get
- Rotated PNG with transparency kept
- Canvas that grows to fit the rotated sprite (optional)
- Direction sheet with N evenly spaced rotations
Tips from making games with it
- Rotating pixel art by odd angles always loses some detail. Small rotations (15°–30°) on simple shapes such as swords, arrows and projectiles look best.
- The direction sheet is a quick way to make 8 or 16 headings for a top-down bullet or car. Touch up the diagonals by hand afterwards.
- If a rotated outline breaks, try the angle ±1°. RotSprite sampling can land differently on neighbouring angles.
- For characters, draw separate directions by hand. Rotation works for objects, not for anything with a clear 'up'.
Use cases
- Making 8-direction projectiles, cars and spaceships for top-down games
- Turning a sword or tool sprite for swing animations
- Rotating whole sheets of tiles or items by 90° in one go
- Fixing art that was drawn facing the wrong way
FAQ
Why does my pixel art get blurry when I rotate it elsewhere?
Most image editors use bilinear filtering, which blends neighbouring pixels into new in-between colors. This tool only samples existing pixels, so the result has the same palette as the input.
What is RotSprite?
An algorithm for rotating pixel art. It upscales the sprite 8× with an edge-aware Scale2x pass, rotates that, then samples back down. Thin lines stay connected far better than with plain nearest-neighbour rotation.
Are 90°, 180° and 270° rotations lossless?
Yes. Quarter turns move pixels around without resampling, so you can rotate back and get the exact original.
Can I rotate every frame of a sprite sheet?
Yes. Turn on per-frame rotation and check the detected grid. Each frame rotates around its own center and keeps its size, so the sheet layout stays the same.
Does it add colors?
No. Both methods copy pixels from the source, so the output palette is a subset of the input palette.
Is anything uploaded?
No. The rotation runs in your browser and the file never leaves your device.
